This Week in Pictures

Here is a little of what we have been doing this week.

Copper Top loves to do things with us while we do school.

Tiger Boy and Batman playing a lego game in the hallway to keep away from Copper Top.

Concentration is needed to pour those bears.

Batman and a shapes game.

Tiger Boy loves mazes.

Sugar Plum doing her math page.

This week we also started our advent study.  We are usingTruth in the Tinsel for the first time.  We are loving it so far.  I will be posting updates on it at the end of each week of study.

Sugar Plum has also learned the "50 States That Rhyme" song but for some reason I am having trouble uploading a video.  Tiger Boy has also learned them too.

OH I ALMOST FORGOT.  My just turned 5 year old read a book to me today.  All by himself. Tiger Boy had learned to read.  He has been sounding out things for a few weeks and so today I got him a book and he read it with no problems.  Such an awesome feeling to hear him sound out the words and get it.

Bread and Butter

This week Sugar Plum has been learning about bread. We talked about how Jesus is the Bread of Life.  We talked about miracles in the Bible about bread such as Jesus feeding the 5,000 and God sending the Israelites manna in the desert.  In science we talked about how yeast causes bread to rise and did experiments to see how that works. Sugar Plum also learned about the Dutch pioneers that came and founded New Amsterdam which eventually became New York.  The Dutch were some of the first to bring livestock across the ocean to the new world.  She learned how they made butter from the fresh cream from the cow's milk.  So we tried our hand at making butter.  It was actually pretty simple and it tasted quite good.

Here is a loaf of homemade bread and the butter we made.

Sugar Plum enjoying her snack.

Tiger Boy enjoying the bread and butter.

Copper Top looking cute as always.

Where We Are

Well we have been in school for over 5 weeks now.  It is going well.  The kids are enjoying it.  I am enjoying it too.

Sugar Plum is most excited about learning the "50 States That Rhyme" song.  She is adding one state each day to her map and we are up to Mississippi today.  She is getting really good at saying the states in alphabet order.  She is doing better with reading too.  I am most pleased with her spelling skills right now. She has struggled with this and it seems to finally be clicking which is great. Sugar Plum is loving her special classes at our local Christian School.  She currently likes PE over Art which I think is because she can talk more. She is most excited to be going on a field trip with the 2nd graders to the zoo tomorrow.

Tiger Boy is doing well in preschool this year.  He surprised us yesterday by counting by 2's all the way to 20. I had no clue he could do that.  I knew he could get to 10 but to 20 was awesome. I am trying to figure out what to do with him for more math stuff because he is ready for more than just counting.  He is also doing well with the short vowel sounds.  He has them all figured out now and e and i no longer sound the same when he says them.  He also enjoys the weekly story time at our library.

Copper Top is turning into a toddler more each day.  He prefers to walk around instead of crawling, unless he wants to get somewhere fast. He is jabbering and points at things all day long.  He knows what he wants and tells me all about it, unfortunately I don't speak his language.  He loves books and it is fun to sit and read with him.

So that is where we are at this point in the school year.

Forgetting to Remember

As I started school with my daughter this morning I noticed as she filled in her calendar notebook today was Tuesday, September 11.  I said "hmm, it's a Tuesday again", thinking back to that fateful Tuesday. I then sat down with her at the table and showed her pictures on the computer of the Twin Towers and explained what happened that Tuesday.  She was born more than 4 years after that September day.  She has no remembrance and until today no real knowledge of what happened but it was time for her to know.  I explained about the airplanes and buildings and the loss of life.  She needs to know so that the day will always be remembered.

I was thinking later about the significance of today as I saw the updates to my friend's Facebook statuses.  Most were about where people were and what they were doing when they heard about the attacks on the World Trade Center or on the importance of remembering the events that happened that horrible day 11 years ago.  It made me stop and think about the other days in our country's history that were so bad that many people can tell you where they were depending on what event you ask them about.

For my Grandma's generation it was Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941.  She could probably tell me where she was at that time.  She would have just turned 16. It was a "date which will live in infamy" according to President Roosevelt. And for that generation I am sure it was.

For my Mom's generation it was the assassination of President Kennedy, November 22, 1963. She has told me about that day.  She was 10.  It had an affect on her and all those that remember hearing about it.

For my husband it was the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger, January 28, 1986.  He was in school watching it live on TV. He was 8.  I was 6 at the time and don't really remember it.  I remember hearing about it but I don't know if it is actual memories or that I have heard about it.

I was thinking about these events in our history and wondering when they became common dates again.  When did people begin to forget and stop associating that date with the event that happened?  I know those closely effected by them will never forget, but when did the rest of our nation forget those important things?  Did people forget to pass along the information? When did they become something that was just taught in history class at school?

I know I don't think about Kennedy on November 22nd each year, nor the Challenger at the end of every January.  I actually had to look up those dates.  I knew Kennedy was shot in November but didn't know the day.  The one day that I do remember every year is December 7.  My husband thinks I am a little weird for remembering it but I do every year.  The reason: my Dad.  My Dad was in the Army for 24 years.  He is a huge military history buff. He knows more stuff about wars, weapons, generals, and other military stuff it is crazy.  I remember from a young age knowing what Pearl Harbor Day was.  He talked about it.  It was something that was important to him. Yes, it happened 10 years before he was born but he learned about it and made sure us kids knew about it.

I am wondering if that our culture will ever forget to remember what happened on 9/11.  Will it become just a normal day?  I hope not.  Our country was forever altered on that day.  It needs to be remembered.  It must be remembered.  So, I told my daughter about it today.  I answered her questions. I will do my part to make sure the next generation will know about September 11, 2001.

3-2-1 Penguins! Giveaway!

I had the opportunity to review the complete first season of 3-2-1 Penguins! from the creators of Veggie Tales.

The story is about 8 year old twins Jason and Michelle who are staying with their grandmother for the summer.  While there they discover a tiny spaceship and 4 penguin toys.  They ship and penguins come to life and have the kids help them solve problems around the universe.

This DVD is the complete first season as it appeared on TV. It includes 13 episodes. Each episode deals with a character trait or value that the kids need to learn or are having hard time showing.  Some of the themes are taking turns, being lazy, envy, giving, compassion, complaining and more.

My Thoughts:
I really liked this DVD.  Both of my big kids were excited when I put in for them.  They had watched some of the episodes on NBC's Qubo on Saturday mornings.  I really like how the episodes deal with different issues that are relevant to my kids.

Tiger Boy age 4:
I like it.  I like Zigel. It is funny.

Sugar Plum age 6:
I really like it is funny.  Zidgel and Kevin are not real smart.  Michelle is my favorite person.  I like the song.

3-2-1 Penguins! will be available on September 15, 2012.

You can enter to win it free here.  The giveaway ends Monday, September 17.  All you need to do to enter is leave me a comment saying what your favorite thing about Veggie Tales is.

Random Thoughts

A few random thoughts....

1. I might need to plan and stick to a schedule with my kids.  I have often been lazy and we just kind of go with the flow most days.  I am seeing that is not really working.  I think it might be harder on me than them.

2. When I plan the above schedule I want to include some one on one time each week with my kids.  They all crave my undivided attention a lot and I think knowing when they get mommy all to themselves might be cool to them.

3. I am loving our curriculum this year.  I know I already said that in another post but seriously it is great.

4. I need to write my blog posts about the Veggie Tales DVD reviews.  Soon.

5. I got to go shopping by myself today.  4 hours of bliss by myself.  It was so nice.

6. I bought new towels for the bathroom today.

7. I am really needing to get the pictures ordered for Copper Top's baby book. I am 8 months behind. Poor third kid.

Veggie Tales: Penniless Princess Giveaway

Our family once again has had the opportunity to watch and review the newest DVD from Veggie Tales. The Penniless Princess is based on the story The Little Princess.

Here is what the wonderful people at Veggie Tales are saying about the Penniless Princess:
It doesn’t matter what you have…it matters what’s in your heart!
Sweet Sara Crewe has everything a little girl could want – a loving family, lots of friends and a closet full of frilly dresses!  But when life takes a turn and Sara goes from riches to rags, will she realize that her true worth lies not in what she has, but what’s in her heart?  Find out in this inspiring new story from VeggieTales, based on the beloved classic novel “A Little Princess,” that reminds kids who they are in God’s eyes.
To watch the trailer click here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJO5fiP-jps

We really enjoyed watching The Penniless Princess.

Sugar Plum age 6:
I liked it. I learned that God is with you no matter what.  My favorite part was when the men next door made food for Sara.  The funny part was when a girl went upside down in her chair.  I was glad she found someone to live with at the end. God loves you no matter what.
Tiger Boy age 4:
I liked the last part. I learned God loves you all the time. It was funny when the girl went upside down.
My Thoughts:
As you can see both big kids loved it.  I also really enjoyed it.  I have always loved the story of The Little Princess and Veggie Tales did an awesome job with a great story.  Sara was a sweet girl who showed God's love and kindness to others even when they perhaps didn't deserve it.  I loved the message in this DVD that God is with you and it is important to show him to others around you no matter what you face in life.
GIVEAWAY!!!  Veggie Tales is going to give one of you readers a copy of this great new DVD.  To enter simply leave a comment telling me what your favorite Veggie Tales show is.
The contest is open until Wednesday, August 1st at 9 am.  I will pick a winner using random.org.  Please make sure you leave way for me to contact you.

Summer

I am really enjoying our summer break right now. We are relaxing and taking life easy.  The big kids are taking swimming lessons at the Y and are loving it.  After the first day of class Sugar Plum was moved up a level due to her great swimming skills.  She was so proud.  Tiger Boy is taking lessons for the first time and has learned quite a lot.  He is not the fish is sister is but I am glad he is becoming more comfortable in the water.

I have been working on lesson plans for the fall.  I have taken a big leap and purchased a core curriculum for Sugar Plum. We will be using My Father's World for second grade.  I am still using Abeka for phonics and language arts. I have also purchased Abeka K4 for Tiger Boy.  I think he is ready to take his learning to a new level and I am excited to see him grow this year.

Super Baby (he still needs a better name) is almost 11 months old and is learning new things each day. He can sign milk, wave bye-bye, and cruise with ease.  It is hard to believe he is almost 1.  He continues to be a joy in our lives. Now if I could just get him to sleep through the night life would be really nice.

That's really all for now.  I am hoping as I begin this new year things will move nicely and I will be able to be more faithful the this little blog.  I am not making any promises but I will try.

Purposeful

I think it is time to get more purposeful in my preschool planning with Tiger Boy.  We have been loosely following a curriculum until now, but I think he is ready for more.  I am going to try to figure out more things to do with him this weekend.  I know I need to find things that hold his interest and are fun.  I want him to enjoy doing school and not just get it done.  Hopefully, by my spending more time with him on school he will learn and enjoy it at the same time.

Veggie Tales: Robin Good

Today I sat with my two big kids and watched Veggie Tales newest DVD.  It is called Robin Good and His Not-So-Merry Men.

About the show:
Theres no hurt too big for God! Robin Good has a mission - fundraising from the rich and giving to the poor! But when a greedy Prince starts stealing the townspeople’s hams, donations are down and Robin’s band of friends desert him to give robbing a try. Can Robin overcome his hurt, show his friends what’s right and restore the townspeople's hope?

My thoughts:
I enjoyed this very much.  Once again Veggie Tales has done a great job in making a quality story for kids and adults to all enjoy. It tells of the importance of giving all our hurts over to God because he is always there for us.

Tiger Boy's Thoughts (age 4):
I liked it. I liked when Bob gave a ham to the monster.

Sugar Plum's Thoughts (age 6):
My favorite part was when the Prince was sleeping with his teddy bear and said Mama.  I learned that God never stops loving you and you can talk to God when you are sad.  I liked it a lot.

The DVD also features:An adorable short video starring Junior Asparagus: "Lenny and the Lost Birthday". Plays at the start of the show before the main feature.

A digital short that is both hilarious and educational, teaching kids about what a Leap Year means: "Larry's Leapin' Leap Year". Watch it on the DVD and also here: http://www.veggietales.com/robingood

I am happy to say that Veggie Tales has offered to give a copy of this great new DVD to someone who reads my little blog.
